No Added Sugar Challenge

March is National Nutrition Month®! This month is dedicated to learning about healthy eating, making healthy food choices and creating healthy physical activity habits to better ourselves. It’s the perfect time to introduce more fruits, veggies, and fitness in your life as the weather is slowly transitioning from winter to spring. Adding more nutritious ingredients to your diet and being physically active not only boosts your immune system and energy levels, it has been shown to add years to your life. How can you pass that up?

Nutrition by Cor-Cor the Herbivore is holding a 5 day challenge in support of National Nutrition Month®. It’s simple, cut out sugar for 5 days… well maybe it’s not THAT simple. Sugar has been known to be the “health” or “nutrition” thief of our diets. It’s actually more of a drug than a food. It promotes inflammation in the body and may lead to declining liver function, high blood pressure, and weight gain. The goal for this challenge is to eliminate any processed foods with added sugar from your diet for 5 days. That’s no added sugar for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and any snacks. Any natural sugars found in the form of fruits or berries is allowed. Studies have shown that sugar in fruit form is not just harmless, it’s helpful. Consuming fruit with each meal could lower your blood sugar response.

I have completed longer versions of this challenge in previous years and have found myself overly sensitive to added sugars in certain foods that turned me away from eating them. I’ve changed the way my taste buds reacted to “sweets” and realized that berries and other fruits are sweet enough on their own. The idea behind this challenge is to provide awareness of added sugar in foods and to try to rid ourselves of consuming too many processed foods. Do you have what it takes to remove added sugars from your diet for 5 days? There’s only one way to find out.
